Cloning vs. OBD programming

Cloning copies the identity of a working key onto a compatible chip. OBD programming works from the other direction. Equipment plugs into the car's diagnostic port and enrolls a brand-new key ID into the immobilizer's memory. That last point matters more than it sounds: an individually enrolled key can usually be deleted from the car later if it's lost or stolen, while a clone can't be revoked without also deleting the original it copies.

"Transponder" is not one technology. Early fixed-code chips gave way to encrypted and rolling-code families, and each automaker moved through them on its own schedule. Two cars of the same model, a decade apart, will typically need different chips, different blanks, and different programming procedures.

The practical consequences: some older models support do-it-yourself onboard programming, often only if two working keys are already present; many require a diagnostic tool; and some makes gate programming behind a security PIN or a timed delay.
