From roughly the late 1990s onward, most Nissan keys carry a chip that answers the NATS immobilizer. Chip families changed over the generations — earlier cars use simpler transponders, models from around the mid-2000s moved to encrypted chips — so the blank has to match your exact year, and the chip has to be programmed to the car before the engine will run.
Blade, chip and lock/unlock buttons in one unit — common on Versa, Sentra and Frontier trims that kept a turn-key ignition well into the 2010s. Replacing one is three jobs in one visit: cut the blade, program the chip, pair the remote.
Nissan's proximity fob, found on most push-button models — Altima, Rogue, Pathfinder, Murano and others. On most of these the fob pairs through the car's OBD port, on-site. One Nissan quirk: many late-2000s models use an Intelligent Key with a rotary ignition knob instead of a bladed key — the fob itself is the key, and replacement is a programming job plus cutting the small emergency blade inside it.

The model year and key type decide the job — a fair shop quotes a range for your exact car up front, and the final price is agreed before work starts. The range depends on model year, key type — plain metal, NATS transponder, remote head or Intelligent Key — and whether you are adding a spare or replacing every key; newer push-button Nissans sit toward the top of the range because pairing them involves more steps.
Nissan's immobilizer goes by NATS — the Nissan Anti-Theft System — and it has been on most US models since roughly the late 1990s. NATS has moved through several generations, and what your car needs depends on model and year: earlier vehicles use simpler transponder chips, cars from roughly the mid-2000s onward carry encrypted chips, and current models pair Intelligent Key fobs through the diagnostic port — on many newer vehicles that process involves reading or calculating a PIN code from the car's electronics. The right chip or fob and the right procedure are identified from your VIN and model year before any quote, so there is no guessing at the curb.
Losing every key to a Nissan is recoverable on-site for most models — a dealer tow is usually not required. A replacement blade can be cut by code and the transponder chip or Intelligent Key fob programmed where the car is parked. Two honest caveats. First, all-keys-lost always takes longer than adding a spare, because the immobilizer has to accept a brand-new key instead of copying a working one. Second, on many newer push-button models the immobilizer requires a PIN code to be retrieved or calculated as part of the process, which adds a step — and the newest model years can involve extra authorization on top. A twist-knob Altima from the late 2000s and a current push-button Rogue are different jobs — a fair quote names which one yours is before work starts.
On most push-button Nissans the Intelligent Key pairs through the car's diagnostic port, so a mobile locksmith handles it where the car is parked. Newer models can require a PIN code for the immobilizer as part of the process — which procedure your car needs is confirmed before you get a quote.
Many late-2000s Altimas, Rogues and Muranos use a rotary ignition knob with an Intelligent Key fob — there is no bladed ignition key to cut. Replacement means programming a new fob and cutting the small emergency blade that hides inside it for the door lock.
Often no. A worn fob battery is the most common cause, and on many push-button Nissans you can still start the car by holding the fob right against the start button — or in the fob slot on models that have one. If a fresh battery doesn't restore detection, reprogramming or a replacement fob is the next step.
If the car has NATS, a cut-only copy carries no programmed chip: it will turn the door and ignition locks, but the immobilizer keeps the engine from running. The chip has to be programmed to your specific car.
