Honda began putting immobilizer chips in keys roughly in the late 1990s, and the lineup has moved through several chip generations since. The chip has to be paired to your specific car — a cut-only duplicate turns the lock but the engine stays off.
Many Honda models from the mid-2000s through the 2010s — Civic, Accord, CR-V among them — switched to side-milled (laser-cut) blades. These need specialized cutting equipment; a standard key machine can't reproduce them.
On many 2000s and 2010s Hondas the lock/unlock buttons, chip and blade live in one housing. A replacement is three jobs in one stop: cut the blade, program the chip, pair the remote.
Newer Accord, Civic, CR-V, Pilot and Odyssey trims use Honda's proximity system with push-button start. On most of these, fobs are programmed through the car's OBD port at the vehicle.

The range depends on model, year and key type — a plain blade for a pre-immobilizer Honda, a transponder key for a 2000s Civic, a laser-cut remote head key, and a Smart Entry fob for a newer Pilot are four different jobs with different parts and programming steps.
Most Hondas built since roughly the late 1990s carry a factory immobilizer, and the system has changed generations several times since — different chips, different programming procedures, and on many 2010s models a high-security laser-cut blade on top of the electronics. Newer trims add Smart Entry proximity fobs with push-button start. A quick Honda-specific tell: on many models, a flashing green key icon on the dash means the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key it's reading. The right chip and blade type are identified from the VIN and model year before any quote, so the number you hear matches the job.
Losing every key to a Honda usually doesn't mean a tow to the dealership. On most models and years, key codes can be sourced or the door lock decoded on-site, a new blade cut — including laser-cut blades — and the transponder or Smart Entry fob programmed where the car is parked, whether that's a driveway in Kendall or a garage under a Brickell tower. Fair warning on scope: all-keys-lost is a longer procedure than cloning a spare from a working key, push-to-start models take more time than turn-key ones, and on the newest Smart Entry systems extra authorization steps can apply — any of that gets flagged before a price is agreed, not after.
On many Hondas a flashing green key icon means the immobilizer doesn't recognize the chip in your key. Causes range from a damaged or unprogrammed chip to an immobilizer fault. Diagnosing which one it is happens at the car — often the fix is programming a properly chipped key rather than any engine repair.
On most push-button Hondas a mobile locksmith can program a Smart Entry fob through the car's diagnostic port, at the vehicle. The newest model years can involve extra authorization steps — which case your car falls into is confirmed before quoting, so there are no surprises.
Two likely reasons. If your Honda has an immobilizer — most do since roughly the late 1990s — a copy also needs its chip programmed to the car, which key kiosks don't do. And many 2000s–2010s Hondas use laser-cut blades that standard duplicating machines physically can't cut.
